2006 Paint and Pinto Show Season – Alison Willoughby

Norfleet An Sonny (Garth) and I had a remarkably good year in 2006. This year we retired from English performance and other not-so-fun things like Western Pleasure, and concentrated on our favourite Western classes: Trail, Showmanship and for the first time (for me), Western Riding. We attended 13 shows in Paint Zone 1 and Pinto Region 1, including the Pinto World Show in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At the World Show the classes ranged in size from 14 to 35 entries, so this show was tougher than the one we attended in 2004. We won a World Championship in Senior Amateur Trail, and a Reserve World Championship in Senior Amateur English Showmanship, plus 3rd in Amateur Elite Trail, 4th in Amateur Elite Western Showmanship, 5th in Amateur Western Riding and 7th in Amateur Elite English Showmanship. We attended some Region 1 Pinto shows in Washington State which were very successful and at the time of writing in February 2007, even though we only competed in 5 events at each show, we have an interim placing of 9th overall in North America in Senior Amateur Pinto, including 3rd in Trail, 5th in Western Riding, and 6th places in each of English and Western Showmanship and Stock Seat Equitation. Garth is also interim placed 6th in Open Western Riding and 9th in Open Trail in North America. Buoyed by success on the Pinto circuit, I decided to see what we could accomplish on the Paint circuit, because Zone 1 Paint is more difficult and challenging for me. We went to a number of shows in Washington and Oregon, in addition to the Rainbow Classic show hosted by the BCPHC here in Chilliwack. At year end we had collected 48 Paint points, 42 of which, if the BC Paint Horse Club had been in Zone 1 in 2006, would have put us in the Top Five in the zone awards. Since that wasn’t possible, we are happy to be recognized by the Northwest Coordinating Committee (NWCC), which is the organizing committee for the Paint clubs in Idaho, BC, Washington and Oregon. Our final placings at NWCC were: Amateur Western Riding– Reserve Highpoint Novice Amateur Western Riding– Reserve Highpoint Amateur Trail – 3rd The best part of the NWCC shows this year was that our palomino overo yearling colt Kenos Panza Gold (Milo) earned his first Paint points, and finished 3rd in Yearling Trail in Hand, shown by Jodie Moore. I am so pleased with this good looking young fellow; we know he has a great future as a performance horse in the years to come.

My husband Bruce Maitland and I are travelled to the NWCC yearend banquet in Oregon the first weekend in December to celebrate this year’s successes and picked up some cool prizes. Looking forward to what the 2007 show season brings us!

Norfleet An Sonny dies at age 19

Norfleet An Sonny, a 1988 sorrel overo gelding sired by Mr. Norfleet, out of Painted Sonny Dee, was euthanized on July 9, 2007 due to complications following a tendon injury.  "Garth" was bred and raised in Nevada Iowa, before going into training in Washington State.

In his 12 year performance show career, "Garth" earned 356 Open points with Superiors in Hunter Under Saddle, Trail, Western Pleasure and Western Riding.  His Youth show record included 896 performance points erned between 1994 and 2000, with seven Superiors, two ROMs and a Youth Versatility award.  His owner Heather Matz piloted Garth to a Paint World Championship in Western Riding in the Youth Division in 2000.

His last owner, Alison Willoughby, was fortunate to compete on Garth in Zone 1 for three years, earning 188 points and ROMs in Trail and Showmanship.  During that time the team also competed in two Pinto World Shows, winning an Amateur Championship in Trail in 2006 and two Champions in Senior and Elite Amateur Showmanship in 2004, plus many Top Ten placings in both English an Western classes at each show.

Garth was retired at the end of the 2006 show season.  Alison says, "Garth was a sensitive, intelligent horse with a lot of heart and give, and a wonderful work ethic.  He will be sadly missed."  Garth was well known to many on the Paint and Pinto circuits in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia.  He was a versatile, exceptional performer who knew his job and impressed all who came to know him.

Calli Rouse and Im Dun in Diamonds (Babe)

During Calli & Babe's first year of showing in the Youth 13&Under Division in 2004, they had many accomplishments. They managed to work through some tough times together early in the year, but as show season approached, Calli adopted the attitude to just go out & ride every class to the best of her ability. The points started adding up. They added a few new classes during the summer - barrels, poles, stake race & goat tying (Goats 2 - Calli 0!). The ROM’s started arriving in the mail & on Aug. 12 Calli & Babe earned their APHA Youth Championship. Highlights from the 2004 show season included 3 Class Average Buckles & Reserves at the Zone 10 Zone-O-Rama in Red Deer, AB as well as overall highpoint winner for the 13&Under Division. She was the BCPHC Reserve HP Youth 13&Under & No. 1 for APHA Zone 10 (West. Can.) 13&Under! Not only is Calli an achiever in the show pen – in Jan. of 2005, she was chosen as one of the top 16 under the age of 12 soccer players to represent a Lower Mainland team. She will be receiving National Level Coaching in preparation for competing in tournaments in Washington State & California throughout the summer. Way to go Calli – Your family joins with us in extending congratulations on your accomplishments in all your endeavours!

Barb Hazell and RDR Face of an Angel

Congratulations to Barb Hazell and her beautiful BC bred 1999 Chestnut Overo mare RDR Face of an Angel on earning their Novice Amateur Superior award in Showmanship! It took a long trip to Moosejaw, Sask. in early October (brrrrr!) to obtain that one last elusive point. These two have been joined at the hip since Halo was 4 months old & Barb is proud to say that she started Halo herself. By attending clinics & with the help of her coach, Louise Garrard, over the past 5 years they have had many successes competing in both Open & APHA-approved shows. Barb has been a big supported of the BCPHC Open Show Program, winning numerous highpoint awards over the years. She also participates in the APHA Paint Alternative Competition (PAC), achieving 4 Certs. of Recognition (20 pts.) & 1 Cert. of Achievement (60 pts.). This team is currently 9th on the PAC leader list for Trail. 2004 saw many more objectives fulfilled - 5 Register of Merits & a No. 1 APHA Nov. Am. for Zone 10 (West. Can.) & 7th on the APHA Am. list. Barb says, "Halo is an awesome Trail horse". She proved that by winning the title of Sr. Trail Champion at the 2004 Western Heritage Championship. They would like to thank Louise Garrard for all her help in 2004, & also to Colleen Hazeldine for her help at the Calgary Show last September. Barb has been very involved with our club the last few years for which we are extremely grateful, & it has been a joy to watch her grow in confidence & expertise in the show pen. Husband Milt has resigned himself to many quieter weekends looking after the shop while Barb goes off & pursues her passion, but like many things in life, her successes would not be possible without that strong support group at home! We take great pleasure in wishing Barb and Halo 'happy trails' in the years ahead.
