January 9, 2012
In spite of the time of year – or perhaps because of it – there is a lot happening on the business (and social) end of the BC Paint Horse Club. Brace yourself! Here’s a lot of information you need to know (or might find interesting):
Banquet tickets on sale until January 21
Our 2011 awards celebration is booked into the new and spectacular High Point Equestrian Centre Lounge on Saturday, February 4. Even if you’re not up for an award, a catered dinner featuring baron of beef and chicken cordon bleu, not to mention the curiosity factor, should be worth the price of admission! Ticket prices include an adult beverage (wink wink) for the – ahem – adults and pop or juice for those 18 and under, appetizers, salads and dessert. The board is organizing a silent auction and Colleen mentioned we’re looking for donations of gifts for our annual and extremely “pop”ular balloon pop. Tickets to the banquet are $30 for adults; $20 for 18 and under. Happy hour starts at 6, dinner at 7, awards at 8. Reserve your dinner tickets before January 21 by emailing Marilyn at mgriffin@shaw.ca.
Paint Connections 2012
Did you miss out on Paint Connections last year? Well, we are pleased to announce we are updating this advertising opportunity for BC Paint Horse Club members and sponsors this spring just in time for the Quarter Horse Bazaar at Thunderbird, March 18. Paint Connections 2012 will also replace the 2011 version anyone can now see and download from our home page on our new website!
Rates will remain the same as last year – just $35 for a full page; $20 for a half. Advertise your stallion services, training barn or boarding facility, or extend congratulations to your students and coaches (or even yourself – there’s much to be said for self-promotion!) and help us celebrate BC Paint Horses and support the BC Paint Horse Club! Download the flyer here for more information. Deadline to book your ad is February 20.
Wreath fundraiser big success
Many thanks to Natalie Hall and her mom, Dianne Rempel, for creating the beautiful Christmas wreaths for our last minute fundraiser in December! With your support, the club raised just shy of $300!
Membership due
It’s January and it’s time to pay your dues! Good news is the BC Paint Horse Club has not raised its membership fees, so click on the horse icon on our membership page, download your application and mail it to Natalie before show season begins! Don’t forget to take advantage of the “good guy” subscription fee for Northern Horse! And if you’re wondering about that Open Show and Competition Program enrollment …
(Fairly) big changes to the Open Show & Competition Program for 2012
After much deliberation, a coffee clutch at a Starbucks in December, many emails, a couple of Facebook polls and a final kick at the cat at the January director’s meeting, the BCPHC board has agreed to several changes for the Open Show and Competition program (OSCP) in 2012. Because one of the changes was to extend the OSCP show season by having it coincide with our membership (December 1 through November 30), we felt it was necessary to get these on the books sooner rather than later. Here’s the skinny:
The rules changes weren’t a fait accompli. Not everyone got their way and concessions were made, but the process was enlightening and inclusive. As we all agreed, there is always next year, but change is a step in the right direction! Many thanks to Kelly Allen and Margo Murray, directors Dianne Rouse and Cathy Glover and especially OSCP points keeper Pam Malekow, and everyone who chimed in on Facebook!
For more detailed information, go to the OSCP page on the website and download the rules and results forms. Enroll early for the program using the BCPHC membership application.
Sponsors sought
All that said, we expect enrollment fees in the Open Show and Competition Program will fall short of the $700 budget we set aside for OSCP year end awards. (We have nice awards!) In our wildest DREAMS, we’d have – do the math – 28 competitors in open show in 2012, however … that might be a little optimistic. Country Life in BC is already committed to a $100 sponsorship (a little shy of what Devon might have had to remit had the old fees remained in place); who else would like to ante up? Please contact Pam or Cathy Glover if you would like to show your financial support for a program that should resonate with allllll our members who compete with their Paint Horses!
General meeting date set
Colleen has booked our usual room at the Willoughby Community Centre at LEC (7888-200 Street) in Langley for a general membership meeting on Wednesday, March 7. We have room 3 (enter from the south side near the playground) from 6:30 to 9 pm.
For consideration will be some tweaking to our APHA show rules (see the APHA-approved Shows page on the website for the current criteria). There was discussion at the board meeting last week to split the amateur division into “classic” (19 to 44) and “masters” (45 & over) and possibly drop the Junior Horse award. (!?) There’s also a proposal to change the way we tabulate year end points. So … if you’re planning on showing this year, it just might be a good idea to poke your head in the door! Newcomers welcome!
Want to participate?
The balloon pop at our annual awards banquet has been a successful fundraiser for BCPHC for eons! Click on the balloons on the home page of the website to open a letter you can use to help directors solicit donations of gifts ranging in value from $5 to $25 from your local feed or tack store, then contact Natalie or Blodwyn to let them know you have something coming our way! (You don’t have to be a director to be involved …)
Zone One meeting coming up
Zone One is hoping that proposed amendments to their by-laws can be ratified at their February 11 meeting in Hood River, Oregon. The BC Paint Horse Club is part of a collaboration of Paint Horse clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest and we appoint directors to represent us at meetings of the Northwest Co-ordinating Committee and Zone One, which is basically the organizing committee for the Zone One Zone-O-Rama held every August in Oregon.
Our current delegate to both organizations, Jodie Moore, is planning on attending the meetings on our behalf. (It’s quite a trek!). We’ll post Zone One’s minutes of their December meeting, the February meeting agenda and the by-law changes (most appear to be “housekeeping” changes) on our APHA, Zone & NWCC page on our website if you’re interested in giving them a boo. Please contact Jodie if you have any questions or thoughts on Zone activities. For more information on NWCC or Zone One, you can access their websites from our Links page.
Chansation-al
BCPHC member Calli Rouse from Langley is listed fourth overall for Youth 14-18 on APHA’s Top 20 list! Calli and her mare, Chansation, are now based out of Fort Worth, Texas where Calli is attending Texas Christian University (TCU). But a post-secondary education isn’t putting a crimp in their show career. They also achieved honour roll standings in Showmanship 14-18 (ninth), Hunt Seat Equitation (fifth); Western Pleasure 14-18 (tenth) and a not-to-shabby second in Hunter under Saddle Youth 14–18. 2011 is one year this young partnership (Chani was only four in 2011) won’t soon forget; they were also World Champions in Hunter under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation and Reserve World Champion in Showmanship at the Youth World Show in Fort Worth last summer. You can view highlights of their World Show adventure at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chansation/10150134629425383
And for more news about some more BCPHC over-achievers, check out our APHA’s PAC Program page!
BC bred declarations
Don’t forget to download your BC Bred Declaration Form when you’re working on your winter-doldrums paperwork. If you have a BC Bred (born in BC), you’ll need to send the declaration form and a copy of your horse(s) registration papers to APHA points keeper Dianne Rouse before points accumulate for 2012 year ends!
Wedding bells!
Our heartiest congratulations to BCPHC director Blodwyn Bristow who tied the knot with Jim Dusenberry over the Christmas holidays! Jim, a fellow Paint Horse owner as well, hails from Arizona and joins our BCPHC family! Best wishes to you, both!
Kudos for award
We had a lovely email from Kaitlyn Kubillus last week thanking the club for the award she received from the BC Paint Horse Club and for the write up we gave her in Saddle Up in December. Kaitlyn and her APHA gelding, Tux, were Chilliwack Riding Club’s high point Paint Horse in 2011 and the award was presented via our Free Trophy Program, sponsored by Otter Co-op and Sudden Impact. If your riding club or competition is interested in having an award from the BC Paint Horse Club in 2012, check out the information on our Free Trophy Program page and contact Blodwyn Bristow to get on the list.
Ownership requirements
We’d like to remind exhibitors competing in the Open Show and Competition Program that the ownership requirements that APHA has regarding amateur and youth do not apply for OSCP. You can ride a borrowed horse and so long as your BCPHC membership is current, you’ve paid your enrollment fee and you submit your results (one horse/one rider), you’re good to go.
BCPHC director Blodwyn Bristow married Jim Dusenberry December 27.
